No. You don’t need to use anything special.

But you can make your life quite a bit easier if you pick the right software. In particular you don’t want to be developing workarounds for deficiencies that you won’t have in production. Likewise you should not be fooled by software that is easy to install, but not sufficient in production.

I am biased by my experience, as is anybody, but I have seen a lot of people come together solutions out of this and that with horrendous results downstream.

You don’t say what you need to do. So I’m going to just make something up. Let’s assume that you have some substantial amount of event data coming in, some substantial amount of real-time state to get maintained, and a significant amount of archival data. I thanks that means that you need an event stream, the document database, and a substantial file store. You are also going to need a framework for managing what is running on your system.

My recommendation is to get an all purpose data platform like MapR. That will cover all your bases with something that will grow as your needs grow.
